Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail
A nice trail to have an adventure!

About/ History of the Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail
The Creeper Trail is known for its recreational path in Southwest Virginia, going through Damascus toward the North Carolina line near Whitetop. This trail followed a former railroad route in the 1880’s. It features 47 historic bridges and goes through Mount Rodgers National Recreation Area, giving people the chance to ride their bikes, hike, and horseback ride. The trail is accessible at all times, especially during the fall. The Creeper Trail was named after slow-moving steam engines that used to operate in the area.
The Virginia Creeper Trail is highly recommended for people who love the outdoors, seek the wonders of history, and enjoy natural beauties. It was a collaborative effort led by Dr. Dave Brilhart in the late 1970’s. Some supporters for the trail were the US Forest Service, as well as local people like French and Mary Ann Moore. The story behind creating this wonderful trail was when the railroad decided to close down, Brilhart suggested making it into a trail. It took $2 million in federal funding to make and open the trail, secured by US Congressman Rick Boucher.
