About/ History of the William King Museum

The William King Museum of art, culture, and heritage was constructed in 1913 as a public school then became a museum in 1992. Today the museum is located in Abingdon, Virginia where the museum’s history is tied to a settler named William King. William King immigrated to America in the late 1700s and became a wealthy businessman and philanthropist. His will had left money and land to help out the education of Abingdon. The money given to the education led to the formation of Abingdon Male Academy. 

The William King Museum is a national register and historic building. The William King Museum has rotating exhibits so you could see something new every time! The museum is free so anybody can come and see the art and culture of the museum. This museum has a sculpture garden and more. The museum was a segregated high school for African Americans. The museum is a really cool place filled with lots of history.

Community

The William King Museum can be an opportunity for many young artists in our community because the museum has art studios for artists to express their work. Guests visiting the museum can also watch those artists create their work. The William King Museum also has workshops, school programs, and other events throughout the year. The events help encourage the visitors creativity and love for art. The William King Museum is a place to go to experience culture, art, and the community of Abingdon.

2.  The museum is the only nationally accredited art museum in Southwest Virginia.
3.  The museum has decorative arts collections like historic furniture and objects from the region.

5. The building has expanded many times so they could combine modern gallery spaces.
